I've discovered the Universal Photographic Company in the 1899 Kelly's Directory at 34 London Street, Reading. The manager is listed as Mr Ernest William Boxwell.
There's no trace of the company in the 1887 directory; nor the 1903 one.

Trying to narrow the window further, the 1901 census shows Mr Boxwell has moved to Send in Surrey, on the outskirts of Woking. In 1891, he's a lodger in Newport, south Wales, and working as a labourer.

The single Kelly's entry shows William as a manager, like a chain, and not necessarily having his own studio. I couldn't therefore say for sure, but I'd take guess the company was only really active in the 1890s-1902.
