Having just registered for an Olympic pedometer challenge through work, I'm wondering whether or not I could take it a step further. All puns intended.

The original idea is simple: the CRUK employees who want to take part register for a pedometer, then record how many steps they've taken each day, allowing head office to work out how far as a collective we've walked during the Olympic and Paralympic period (27 July - 9 September).

Now I've not really been a fan of any kind of physical activity, but in the last few months Lee and I have been enjoying going for walks around various parts of Pembrokeshire so perhaps I could come up with a way of giving myself some more encouragement.

I've entered the Marathon challenge - recording my steps daily over the 6-and-a-bit-week period. The other two options were Sprint (recording them over a single week), or Relay (as part of a team taking it in turns to record).

Hmmmm, marathon, eh? There's an idea. Step forward a Runkeeper goal.

Marathon

Yep, I'm going to challenge myself to walk the equivalent of 6½ marathons in the 6½ weeks of the Olympic and Paralympic games.

How it'll work

I'm probably going to just use Runkeeper to record the 'active' walks I do, ignoring the total number of steps I take daily using the pedometer. If things get tight towards the end, though, I might convert steps taken in to a distance and add it manually!

I'm not necessarily doing it for charity, but if anyone does want to encourage me with cash they can do so either in person or online at JustGiving. I've set a fundraising target of £170 - that's just £1 a mile, cheaper than a taxi (although I can't give you a piggy back ride home).

I'll keep posting here about my progress and you can always see the graph for yourself over on my Runkeeper profile page.
